Oriental Rugs - Selection & Investing

The decision to purchase an authentic oriental rug is a little more complicated than shopping for other rugs - the pattern, texture, size and style will create a unique look and feel for any home. Additionally, certain characteristics are more prized and valued as a long term investment by those who collect and purchase oriental rugs. Learn how to select the perfect oriental rug for your lifestyle - and future investment with these quick tips:

1. Go Natural. Although synthetic dyes are more stable, nothing compares to the artistry and delicate nature of the natural dyes. Natural dyes tend to cost more but also retain their value in the future.

2. Signed Rugs. Signed rugs are somewhat of a rarity due to the general illiteracy of those creating the works of art. However, merchants or entrepreneurs responsible for the creation and distribution of the rugs often incorporated "signatures" to identify their products. Rugs with highly sought after signatures are prized investments.

3. Washed Rugs. The vivid colors associated with many original rugs wasn't popular in this country so oriental rugs were frequently "washed" in order to remove the vivid colors. Unwashed rugs are highly prized as authentic examples of the original beauty and artistry of the work.

4. Sizing. Overly large rugs may not easily fit into modern day homes so those of a more conservative sizing are considered more desirable in today's market.

5. Cleaning & Maintenance. Few things impact the value and desirability of an oriental rug more than the type of cleaning and maintenance it has received over the years. Houston Oriental rug cleaning requires specialized knowledge of the dyes, weaving and construction methods plus much more to assure the rug retains its full beauty.

To find a Houston rug cleaning company able to care for your oriental rugs, it is imperative to use a reputable company with a nationwide reputation and skilled rug weavers like Kiwi Services.

Rugs: The Classic Choice

It is history and centuries of craftsmanship woven together, spread out in the middle of your living room floor. It could be a magnificent colored canvas that speaks of age and timelessness, adding a breath of the classic to the modern structure that is your home.

Kings and queens could have reclined on one such rug at one time, while the secrets its making remain closely guarded among the tribesmen working quietly in the remotest regions of what is now known as the carpet capital of the world – Iran.

Carpets take years to weave one, and it is all done meticulously excruciatingly by hand. It is made of authentic natural wool, silk, cotton, or a combination of these materials.

For these reasons, a Persian carpet has been long regarded as precious. The least expensive costs around $200, while a 4 x 6 ft piece that took a family in the city of Qum at least a couple of years to create would be sold for $4,000 - $5,000. As for antique pieces of rugs that are preserved in the museums, the figure would simply be astronomical.

The modern carpets or rugs may not have the sense of history like Persian carpets, but they can just as effectively meet a homeowner’s requirements.

Rugs, a smaller version of carpets – are for specific areas, with standard sizes varying from 3 x 5 ft to 9 x 12 ft. The smallest rug is similar in size to a coffee table. In effect, a rug is simply a patch over a certain perimeter. It can be spread under a particular piece of furniture, as opposed to a carpet, which may cover the entire floor.

Experts say that rugs are totally made for accents, aesthetics, to soften the look of a room. They can also be used for comfort as some people find it uncomfortable to walk on a wooden floor.

Rugs, as well as carpets, can provide some means of safety or heighten the sensuality factor in certain parts of the house.

Today’s modern rugs are available in three yarn categories:

1. Wool

It is a natural fiber. It is softer and naturally resilient. If a person step on it, it bounces back. It does not look worn after time has passed.

Wool rugs also have a safety attribute that homeowners would welcome. They are naturally “flame-retardant.” If something burns them, it just scorches the surface. If a cigarette is accidentally dropped on the rug, for example, that particular spot will blacken out but it will not burn or melt.

2. Nylon

It has the same flame-retarding quality, but when burned, it will turn “plasticize” and emit fumes, which could linger for some time, particularly in a closed room.

3. Polypropylene

It is the least expensive among the three. It is neither as soft as flame-retardant as wool and nylon. However, there are currently treatments to make it achieve what wool and nylons can do.

Modern rugs can last up to 20 years, needing only occasional cleaning. Experts recommend that it is best not to shampoo rugs right away. Just vacuum it regularly, depending on the foot traffic it is exposed to.

Finally, try to keep in mind that when you are set to purchase a rug, try to ask yourself some questions like, “Where will it be used?” or “What will it be used for?”

Having carefully taken all those things into account, you should then have a clear idea of the kind of rug that would make a worthy addition to your home.

Tabriz Persian Rugs

Tabriz are one of the most popular Persian rugs. Tabriz is the dominant city of Northwest Iran and is the second largest city in Iran. It has been the center of the carpet trade for hundreds, if not thousands of years.

Tabriz rugs have many unique designs, but the typical pattern is filled with dense floral motifs, large palmettes or vases. Typical colors are dark red and a powerful blue. Newer carpets can also be soft green and brown.

Tabriz carpets come in all different sizes. The majority will range in size from 4X6 feet to 8X10 feet. You can also find rugs up to 10X18 feet.

Tabriz also has several "sub-styles". These include the Mahi, Naqsheh, and Tabatabaie. The Mahi is commonly referred to as "The Decorators Carpet", because the colors available can match any room. The Naqsheh is generally considered the most spectacular of Tabriz rugs due to its coloring scheme. The Tabatabaie has touches of orange, lemon green and beige.

The material used for the pile of Tabriz rugs are wool, silk, or a combination of the two. A beautiful blend of fine Kurk wool and silk is the most common in fine Tabriz rugs, with wool only used in those of medium quality. In the very finest Tabriz rugs, the foundation is pure silk instead of cotton, and some even have 18 or 24 karat gold threads woven into the foundation.

The master-weavers of Tabriz often weave their signature into a part of the carpet's border. These signatures can, of course, be found on extremely fine rugs made in other cities, but a signature on the 'ceremonial' border of a Naqsheh is the ultimate in formality and sophistication, the true mark of Tabriz rugs.

Contemporary Wool Rugs

Contemporary wool rugs come in new and modern designs. They are made from traditional to modern materials that offer permanence and suppleness. Most importantly, these rugs are economical without compromising on quality. Contemporary rugs come in all shapes and sizes, making them perfect for any room, hall or entranceway.

A contemporary wool rug can increase the prominence of a room. It can be the main attraction of the room, giving the entire room a modern, contemporary feel. Hand-knotted and hand-tufted are the two main types of woolen rugs. The difference between the two varieties is that in the hand-tufted type, a small machine or ‘gun’ is used to interleave the yarn into a backing for additional texture. Normally, the value of a hand-knotted rug depends on the amount of knots per square inch. Increase in the knots per square inch directly increases the value of the rug.

Contemporary woolen rugs are manufactured in various countries. Most of the wool rugs made in the US are industrially manufactured instead of being hand tufted or hand knotted.

Contemporary woolen rugs in a modern home add a warm touch to any room. Many people favor the look and feel of woven hand made or tufted rugs. Many of the popular contemporary styles are now comparatively affordable for low budget redecorating.

Conventional to off the wall, today's contemporary rugs come in a wide range of colors, textures and patterns. People looking for either a delicate shade to accent their setting or a vibrant expression for increasing prominence, now have a wide range of contemporary modern rugs to choose from. Finding the right contemporary rug for a home is now relatively easy. A redecorating store or a specialized wool rug shop can assist people with their needs and also give recommendations on style. Introduction of the Internet has also made it possible to purchase or order contemporary woolen rugs online.

Essentially a braided rug is a rug that has been formed by braiding strips of material together. They are very strong and come in a variety of shapes and colors to suit any home. Although they are usually found in an oval shape, don’t be surprised to find circular, rectangular or even heart-based shapes.

Braided rugs can add a touch of elegance to any room. They can either be used on their own, to compliment other rugs and carpets, and they can even be hung on walls. The rugs come in many varieties from the more simple types, to mixed colored rugs, to the more dynamic multi-layered type rugs. You’re certain to find a braided rug to accompany your tastes while looking great in your home.

Braided rugs have a long history, which begins from the late 1800’s. Braided rugs where in fact made from less graceful materials like old clothing or fabric. The rugs were not used for decorative purposes but instead used to cover their cold floors and warm their homes. Modern braided rugs are made from the finest cotton and wool and generally last longer.

In the early 1900’s, braided rugs started to become an art form and their popularity soared to the 1930’s.

These days, braided rugs are considered antiques, so the older the rug is, the more expensive it probably is. New braided rugs will be more affordably priced and are recommended over the older types, especially if you are a new to this type of rug.

If you are interested in creating your own braided rug, there are braided rug kits available from craft suppliers. Unfortunately interest in braided rugs has waned over the years but can still be found in area rug retailers, furniture shops and on the Internet.

Area Rugs 101

Area rugs are a great way to accentuate portions of a room and add to the mood and ambience of the interior decoration by harmonizing colors and shapes. Ideally, the primary colors of the rug should complement the wall, furniture, and furnishing colors. The rugs can be used to focus attention on another aspect of interior decoration or can be used as the center of attraction. Large, centrally placed medallion rugs garner maximum attention. Area rugs are available in a variety of materials, textures, and shapes.

Area rugs are an excellent combination of form and utility and beautifully crafted hand rugs are veritable works of art. Area rugs fit in with the décor of every room and this adds to their appeal; they not only enliven a dull room but also help to reduce noise levels.
